Most people wait for a lot of time to complete their academic degrees.

They wait for the exams to grant them a certificate of completion. Then they’ll wait for the interview calls.

Many people do the same at work. They wait for their manager to give them authority to add up to a vocation.

A few people, only a few, grab it. They grab the best learning they can get, pushing their surroundings for more, finding something to get done, and inventing a new perspective. They acquire more lessons than the minimum, they invent new ways of getting things done and they come out with wonders.

A few people, only a few, grab opportunities at work. They are the true leaders, no matter what their titles are.

Today is the greatest time for the Leaders.  What would you like to grab today?

Most projects don’t collapse sensationally.

They collapse slowly.

But you wouldn’t know that for sitting in at steering meetings or reading monthly project status reports.

Same way, businesses, countries and families collapse. Slowly.

Good and bad thing about this is: It involves people. Most people have tendency to respond to urgency. People take  massive actions only when encountered with an urgency.

If we change our learning systems, perhaps, people’s tendencies can be altered to respond to important stuff instead. But, I’m not sure when.

To combat with such slow collapsing, most project managers take an unsubtle, wider shot: A team revamping program or totally redesigned collaboration software.

The solution, more probably than not, is to consistently stop the slippage. To continuously improve the uninteresting stuff (e.g. how people respond to newly discovered information in project discussions and how they can do it even better).

Projects fail slowly. Success might come faster, though. That’s where the role of a dependable project manager comes in.

That role is beyond the classic definition of the project management. Person in this role  ‘leads’ the project, not just manages it.

And one of the most important activity of ‘leading’ a project is to prevent a slow collapse by getting into the vertical depth of the matters and do everything possible to get every small thing right. Easier said than done.

Blind person with vision can ‘see’ what a person with eyesight and zero vision cannot.  Good thing with zero vision thing is that it can be changed, for better.

What, exactly, does a project manager do?

In the software development, the project manager doesn’t always write code, create architecture, perform system tests, or provide funding.

And yet, no project manager, no project.

The project manager asks questions, “How do we deliver as per the scope?” “What customer satisfaction survey says about the latest release?” The project manager is always focused on delivering results, whether the result is quality, revenue or customer satisfaction.

The job you do, obviously, has nothing to do with whether or not you have the mindset of a project manager. I’ve seen talented people who are clearly project managers…and no-hopers who were just doing something for the sake of doing. I’ve worked with people who always want to get things done…and with those who have an excuse ready when something doesn’t work out.

Project management is not limited to the discipline of project management professionals – all of us can learn how to practice it for getting things done.

If you intend to produce a unique product, service or result that adds value, project management is for you – excellent beings always keep getting better in project management, regardless of their job titles.

At some point, most software engineers start talking about themselves like they’ve got enough experience.

“Even if it seems right, it is too late to change our focus now.”

Or

“Why do I need to understand the mobile platform now? My twelve year experience in client-server and web is enough.”

Even organizations and families make decisions like this. They decide it’s just too late to change.

Often the point is missed: It’s distinct for everyone. It’s a choice. It’s possible to start building six pack bodies at 47, learning computer skills at 65, or change your business with an improved customer collaboration model that adds value.

It’s getting tougher day by day, but that’s the reason it’s worth causing. And, it feels good to be cause in the matter. Isn’t it?

Some musicians spend years doing nothing but practicing a piece of music and get it validated from their artist guru.

If the piece of music isn’t right, it doesn’t matter what else you do, you cannot perform in the live show.

Clients of most software programming projects that expect you to build great applications presume that you already know how to play that small piece of music.

They presume that you:

• understand the distinction between content and form, logic and looks;
• have got experience in crafting great user interfaces;
• know that solutions thinking overrides technology biased thinking;
• understand the importance of ‘specifics’;
• have empathy for what your client needs;
• know how to make a compelling ground for what you believe.
• …

Too often, we quickly jump on to the next thing, neglecting to get even acceptable enough at the basics.

Confucious said it long ago; almost all of us have read it but only few of us practices: “Small Things Make Perfection but Perfection is Not a Small Thing!”
