It is simple like hell.

Care about details.

At least don’t deliver bad experience.

Amazing thing is how little attention is paid to these two, how often we encounter service businesses who just don’t get it.

You can easily find a web hosting provider who guarantees 99.99% site uptime and you’ll find at least two instances in a month where your website is not functional. On asking the hosting support, the answer would be something like this: because of some blah blah blah, it is not up. It should be live as soon as the problem gets resolved…Vague answers. No attention to detail. No care about the customer.

You can easily find a restaurant whose mission is to serve and make customers delighted but after organizing a group lunch of 50 people, when you discover that the invoice is 25% higher than what was agreed, the restaurant manager would say: Maybe it is mistake of my staff maybe yours but nothing can be done once the invoice is prepared. Let me act as a third person. I can give you a good advice: You should have taken the order details in written! Which experience can be worse than this in hospitality industry?

In today’s business, real product or any product or service is: Great user experience.

Overwhelming Google ads or Twitter marketing campaign can’t undo one bad experience. Don’t forget that customers’ public testimonials are just one tweet away.

If you can’t deliver great user experience, you don’t get paid. If you get paid for less than great user experience, you’ll not last longer in the business.

Today, I’d like to talk about Dependable Project Managers – Yes, in the time of PMI powered Project Management practices; I want to throw some light over the major characteristics of dependable Project Managers.

Well-built Project Manager manages with veracity and uprightness. The best Project Managers are the most dependable.

They have business acumen. They have a gut; raze that guides them well.

They are Client-centric. They agree with Druker’s known saying, “Only a customer can define the purpose of a business”.

They think global, and act local. They have a global mindset which is 100% end-client-focused.

They scorn red-tape and welcome change. They believe that “Change is a never ending constant.”

They are strong communicators – they practice empathy. They know how to listen. They don’t yell out orders at subordinates.

They are real team builders. They take genuine interests in the individual – in lieu of that they craft the relationship such that the individual give the best to the project.

They focus on achieving the objectives of the project. Individual contributions are meaningful only when they help the project achieve its goals.

They are energizers. They inspire others to perform. They articulate a vision of the project for the team to carry out.

They are enthusiasm powerhouse. It multiplies individual’s capabilities.

They accomplish and deliver. They don’t just meet the goals, they beat it.

They love what they do. They get up every day to attack the task-in-hand. For them, work is their love and not just work.

In a nutshell, Dependable Project Managers are those one who have tremendous vigour. They are able to uplift their teams to perform with 200% efficiency. More to that, they are always in good touch of their clients and deliver on time. They grab power by always doing what they say they would do. Every single time.

You’re in Project Management. Your job is to manage projects.

I once worked with a small SOHO company (7 employees). We had to deliver several projects. The Project Manager used to spend 4 hours daily (yes, and I don’t kid you) chatting with the client, at the time of client’s choice. (He used to work till 11.30pm in the nights while office closing time was 7:30pm!)

Guess what, that project completed at the cost of two other. The Project Manager didn’t find time to manage other projects well.

If you’re the Project Manager, your job is to manage the project and to deliver the results. Results are exactly what is expected from the project.

Try and get out of everything else because everything else is mostly a waste of your time. Manage Project by working on it not by working in it.

Be systematic and specific. Implement a Project Collobaration System at the earliest. Until that, ask questions in e-mail, get answers in e-mail. Chat should be just for building rapport with the client, not for taking the requirements.

You must have free time to ‘think’ about successful delivery, not just to be engaged in chatting. Ensure that for successful project management.
