In my decennium long experience journey, I have seen organizations which have a great vision – a vision to become a world class company which is super-positive. 100% win-win for all the entities involved, performance centric, employee and society friendly, ultimate customer delight centric… the best!

But with very little actions.

Little actions lead to fewer results and thus little experience to count on. But they have great measurability of the results.

Measurability is the lens of their vision.

The other type of organizations is “Action” centric. They do not have any permanent vision to stick with. For them “crafting vision” is an overhead. They are in fascination of actions.

High actions lead to more results and more experience to count on. But they lack the essential – measurability.

And, anything which cannot be measured cannot be repeated with 100% surity, no matter if it is success or failure.

Actions are in harmony only when they are measured, chaos otherwise.

It is damn straightforward to think but getting any organization see the world the way it is and not the way they wish it were isn’t that easy.

A thoughtful effort is needed in the organization with an attitude, with an environment that allows people to see things the way they are, to deal with the way it is now, not the way they wish it would be.

Look back at the past year’s failures. See

Whether most of the failures are caused by your unwillingness to embrace the realities?

Couldn’t those failures be dealt with facing the realities and taking correct actions?

That’s what management is – identifying and doing something about it. Not mere anticipating, not waiting for the next plan. Not being in re-evaluation loop all the time. Not being irresolute.

It’s getting on with it!

As the year is coming to an end, the few critical questions are:

Have you listed down and evaluated the failures of the past year?

Did you embrace the realities of the failures?

How comfortable are you seeing the things the way they are – and the way they are not – without any sugar-coating?

If you are not comfortable, what would you do to be comfortable and act upon it?

Your actions triggered by answering the above questions would be the Christmas Gift for me… and my Merry Christmas wishes to you too!

What is it

Eight semester professional training program offered by SAP in partnership with IIIT-Band BITS-Pilani whereby the degrees will be provided by the institutes itself.

Objective of the program

To bridge the gap between what colleges offer and what the industry wants – a practical knowledge of industry realities among students and lack of people with advanced and specialized degrees.

To encourage students to go for advanced engineering degrees while getting professional training in parallel.

How it works

Under the program, promising students are selected though a rigorous technical entrance test and an interview on soft skills and behavioral analysis. Once selected, the students enroll in a post-graduate program with either IIIT-B or BITS-Pilani while spending a portion of their time working on a part time basis with SAP Labs. On successful completion of the program, students will get an offer to join SAP and are treated at par with experienced candidates.

Eligibility criteria (for the batch starting in Aug 2010)

67% aggregate marks in B.Sc /BCA

Along with 60% marks in Standard 10 and 12 (II PUC)

For B.Sc. students the major subjects should be either of Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Electronics, Information Technology or Statistics)

Stakeholder comments

As per Peter Zencke, Member of the Executive Board of SAP AG., this program allows promising students the opportunity to go in for higher degrees without losing out on gaining a first-hand perspective on cutting-edge global product development,”

As per Professor Sadagopan, Director, IIIT Bangalore., This program is a commendable initiative by SAP to enhance the professional skills of the students and act as a mentor to them. Competitive engineering talent is the keystone for the IT industry in India. We need to capitalize on our existing talent pool and work towards placing them at par with international standards. We are confident that our association with SAP Labs will elevate the standards of IT education in the country.

Possible action items

If the eligibility criteria is met, Resume of the student can be sent to scholar@sap.com latest by 15-January-2010

Inspired from the Taiwanese movie Three Times , Love Aaj Kal is an adorable movie that shows nature of wooing in the ever changing times.

It is a director’s darling; non-mundane love story which wasn’t very easy to write and direct. In fact, there are two different stories which run in-parallel within the same context. If you are detail oriented and attentive, this is the move will suit your taste for sure.

Love Aaj — London, San Francisco, Delhi — 2009.

Jay (Saif Ali Khan) andj Meera (Deepika Padukone) are a modern-day couple who lives in London. They enjoy each other’s company but are utmost practical from nature. When their life pulls them in different paths and they believe that long distance relationship does not work, they decide to celebrate their official call-off of their relationship.
Love Kal — Delhi, Calcutta — 1965.

Veer Singh [Saif Ali Khan again who played the role of young Rishi Kapoor] is struck by a bombshell when he sees Harleen for the first time. He travels to Calcutta, a thousand kilometers by train to stand under her balcony, only to have a glimpse of her face. And yet not speak a word with her.

Love Aaj-Kal

Story of Jay and Veer runs simultaneously. Both are almost opposite and not able to understand to each other. When the story progresses, the director beautifully makes us realize that experience of the love is same even though the process of relationship is totally different.

The story unfolds in a novel, never-tried way. Use of Saif-in-sepia as young Rishi is a great experiment which is capable of confusing some people. While in the end, fragmented pieces are put together, the enthralling picture emerges.

The essence of the film is the second hour. Deepika’s indecisiveness … marriage … realization… waiting… the end when lovers meet… everything is fascinating.

Imtiaz Ali is proves that he is a brilliant guy. He is successful in establishing himself as a successful storyteller. Songs of his selection are gem. Twist, Ahun-Ahun and Chor-bazari are just awesome.

Saif and Deepika have given the best of their performances. Rishi Kapoor as always is cool. Gisele Monteiro who plays the role of Harlin is pretty. Rahul Khanna also does well. Neetu Singh-Kapoor in the end is a pleasant surprise.

Anyone who has been in love ever will enjoy the move if they understand the essence of it.

Storytelling: 3.5/5
Dialogues: 2.5/5
Music: 3.5/5
Acting: 3.5/5
Direction: 3.5/5
Love: 4/5
Overall: 3.5/5 (Good and enjoyable)

In one sentence: The feeling the calling of true love remains the same in any given context.
